Yes, hi-vis clothing is classed as PPE because it’s worn to protect the person wearing it.
Workers wear hi-vis clothing to be seen in low light and hazardous environments. This keeps them protected from potential hazards such as moving traffic.
Hi-vis clothing is clothing that is designed to make the wearer visible. It features bright, fluorescent colours (typically orange and yellow), and reflective strips or panels that reflect light.
All hi-vis clothing must meet the EN ISO 20471 standard.
The standard makes sure that hi-vis clothing can be easily seen both day and night, with minimum levels of fluorescent and retroflective materials needed on the clothing.
There are three classes of visibility, with Class 3 offering the highest levels of visibility.
